elZinc Natural is an original metallic grey finish created throughout our production process. When exposed to the elements, zinc naturally develops a thin protective layer referred to as patina. The patina develops resistance to weathering and corrosion. This results in the gradual loss of its metallic luster until it becomes a matte grey color.
The uniqueness of elZinc Natural lies in the fact that its color largely depends on environmental conditions. These conditions are determined by the matter and dust found in the air and what is drawn into the patina itself. Many are familiar with the oxidation process of steel. Steel rusts and will continue to corrode when rust is present on its surface, resulting in a product too damaged to use.
However, due to zinc’s patina, it has the ability to resist weathering. When it is exposed to the everyday weathering process, a protective layer of begins to form on the surface. This prevents the corrosion process that steel experiences. As a plus, the resulting zinc-carbonate layer creates a beautiful patina for a very desirable appearance.
In addition to its beauty, this protective patina provides longevity that allows zinc to remain intact. For how long? It is not uncommon for zinc structures to last over 75 years in most climates.
